Ohio woman killed while trying to cross U.S. 190

A 20-year old woman from Ohio was killed Wednesday from injuries she suffered after being hit by a car as she tried to cross U.S. Highway 190, state police said.

Erica Lewis, of Sidney, Ohio, was pronounced dead on the scene after being struck by a 1999 Ford Escape driven by Alice Brody, of Mandeville. Lewis was attempting to cross the 4-lanes of United States Highway 190 near Fairway Drive heading east following an argument with her boyfriend. Brody was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident and suffered no injuries as a result of the impact.

Lewis and her boyfriend, Aguileo Beltran, had been arguing when Lewis demanded Beltran let her out of their automobile. Beltran did so, and drove away. He returned shortly afterward and came upon the scene of the accident where he identified Lewis to police working the scene as his girlfriend and the victim. He told police he felt bad for having allowed Lewis to leave the car, so he returned. Beltran said he and Lewis were on their way home to Mandeville where they were staying at a home on Beech Street when the argument broke out.

After an autopsy preformed Thursday, Mark Lombard, chief investigator for the coroner's office, said Lewis died of traumatic injuries to the head and chest.

Beltran was found to be an illegal alien. Although Beltran was not cited in the accident, he was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish jail for driving without lawful presence in the United States and driving without a license. He is being held without bail.

Police said alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
