Pending a decision Thursday by the St. Tammany Parish School Board, the grade configuration at Mandeville's new elementary school might be kindergarten through first grade instead of kindergarten through third grade as originally intended.

The potential switch in plans reflects the desire of parents and teachers to keep the Magnolia Trace School community intact.

Principal Melanie Edwards said the need for a new school is clear as Magnolia Trace's enrollment is approaching 900 students.

However, she said parents and teachers have become close at the school, and they fear that any attempt to redraw boundaries when the new school is built would tear the community apart.

The construction of the new elementary school is part of the 2004 bond issue, which referred to the new school as a kindergarten through third grade school.

Superintendent of Schools Gayle Sloan said the board could change that configuration if it desires to make the new school kindergarten through first and make Magnolia a second- and third-grade school.

The board will also vote on recommendations to accept a $2 million bid from Ragusa Construction LLC for the renovation of classroom wings at Slidell High School and to accept the architectural firm of Gasaway-Gasaway-Bankston to make design changes at the Brooks Curriculum Center and Slidell Pathways.
