Our View

St. Tammany News

It might sound strange, but St. Tammany Parish residents can look back on the past two years since Hurricane Katrina and collectively thank their lucky stars.

Despite massive destruction, the parish is looking pretty good these days. Our economy is booming, our population is growing and the parish is on the cusp of becoming a force to reckon with in the state.

With that good news, there are still hundreds of parish residents struggling to get their lives back to normal. Many of those people need housing, and thanks to the nonprofit organization, Habitat for Humanity, there are a lot of St. Tammany residents who did not have the means to own a home of their own who now live in new houses.

Habitat for Humanity is not a give-away program. Its clients have to pay a no-interest loan, plus put in "sweat equity" by helping to construct the house.

Habitat for Humanity West St. Tammany was one of the first chapters in the U.S. Established in 1981, it has built over 130 homes, with 75 houses constructed since Katrina.

East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity has been around since 1992, and in that time has built 24 homes. Since Katrina, ESTHH has built 13 houses.

In the Gulf Coast area, Habitat for Humanity is responsible for building 1,200 homes since Hurricane Katrina.

Habitat for Humanity West St. Tammany has a goal of building 100 homes in the next two years, and East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity aspires to 88 more homes by June 30, 2008.

To do that, Habitat needs lots of volunteers. As Habitat West President Maureen Clary puts it, "We are in dire need of volunteers."

We have said this before in earlier editorials, but both chapters of Habitat for Humanity need the help of those in the parish who can donate time and money to this worthy program.

One doesn't need to know how to drive a nail or saw a piece of wood to help out. They will be taught the skills needed to build a house.

As we celebrate the two-year anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters to hit the U.S., we, who have rebuilt, must find the time to help out those in the parish who do not have the means to help themselves.

To volunteer, donate money or sponsor, call the Habitat for Humanity West at 893-3172 or the East St. Tammany Habitat at 639-0656.

" Wow, the first thing i was asked when the police woke me standing over my bed was, " Can we search your truck?"
Few nights before I won 1400$ from the casino, and had 600$ in my wallet to deposit in the bank. I do not carry my wallet with THAT much money around in my pocket. It was in the center console of my truck as always.
I guess they needed some more evidence.
Kind of shady. Well i hope they had a great time with my 600$!Don't you love police men? =) "
