A recent zoning variance granted to a Pearl River resident during Tuesday's Board of Aldermen meeting has caused some concern among citizens there.
Don Crowe, brother-in-law of Alderwoman Marie Crowe, applied for a variance for the car lot he wants to build at the site of an old office building on the Louisiana Highway 41 Spur.

Part of the current zoning restrictions dictate the site be resurfaced and enlarged. This would raise the lot above the level of the building and possibly cause flooding during a storm.
The variance was approved unanimously, and Alderwoman Crowe did not recuse herself from the voting. The town's attorney, Ron Guth, would not comment on whether or not this might pose an ethics violation.
In other business, a public hearing has been set for Sept. 25 at 6:45 p.m. to review the property tax millage.
The town is not looking to change the current rate of 10 mills, but a hearing is required by the state in order to keep it at that level.
It was also announced that a town cleanup is set for Oct. 20, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Residents should meet at the Town Hall to pick up trash bags, gloves and other supplies, as well as street assignments.
