Edgar Kimball and his family are left sifting through rubble left behind by a fire that enveloped the entire rear of their home last Friday.
At 9:39 p.m., Mandeville's Fire Protection District 4 responded to a call concerning a large structure fire at 2835 Lakeshore Drive. Upon arrival, additional personnel was requested, and with 35 firefighters, three engines, a ladder truck, two medical units and one rescue unit, crews were able to contain and vanquish the flames after nearly three hours of battle.

"Because it was an addition, it hindered us from getting to the fire, but it also slowed the spread down because when they added the roof, they didn't completely connect it to the existing roof which created a barrier between the two keeping the fire from spreading to the other parts of the house," he said. Haydel added that the brisk wind was another factor that hampered their efforts.
According to the initial reports, the point of origin is believed to have been near the fireplace, but officials are still uncertain of the exact cause.
Family members were inside the home at the time of the fire, but they managed to escape without injury.
"The guys did an excellent job of stopping it," Haydel said. "You can tell by looking at the damage, they did exactly as they were trained to do.
The damage sustained to the property is estimated to be near $150,000.
