Pearl River trailed 6-0 heading into the sixth inning of Thursday’s bi-district round game in Alexandria, but the Rebels made a furious comeback before falling short, 6-5.

Pearl River, the 21st seed and playing its first year in 4A, finished the season with a 15-13 overall record.

Alexandria, the 12th seed, will take on the winner of Archbishop Shaw and St. Martinville.

Down 6-0 after five, Tyler Kavanaugh, the Rebs’ lone senior starter, homered to make it 6-1 after six innings.

In the seventh, Jeremy Lang led off with a home run.

Jeremy Suber followed with a walk and Shane Fleming singled. After a strikeout, Kavanaugh put down a bunt single. A passed ball scored Suber and with two outs, Eric Mavor hit a 2-run double trimming the lead to 6-5. Chris Simon came up representing the potential go-ahead run, but popped out to second to end the game.

Pearl River coach Steve Bullock said he was happy with the season that saw his team in a playoff tie-breaker game for second place.

“I think moving up to 4A, not many people would have given a chance to fight for second place,” Bullock said. “It was a pretty good year overall.”

He added that the future is bright for his club that loses just two seniors with Kavanaugh and Alex Perez.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do, but it should be promising,” Bullock said.
