Fontainebleau girls track wins Regional title

FHS sprinter Riles selected girls Track MVP; Northshores Walker named boys Track MVP

Fontainebleau junior sprinter Jamie Riles was a triple event winner Thursday sparking the Lady Bulldogs to the Class 5A Region II team title in the meet held at Catholic High in Baton Rouge.

FHS won the girls’ title with 100 points sparked by Riles 30 points being named the Track MVP. The Lady Bulldogs edged Dutchtown (88) and Baton Rouge High (74). Hahnville (59) and St. Joseph’s Academy (44) rounded out the top five. St. Scholastica Academy (39) was sixth followed by the Mandeville Lady Skippers (26). Northshore’s Lady Panthers (17) came in 12th. Covington High (8) was 14th with Slidell (4) tying for 15th place.

The top three individuals in each event qualify to advance to the 2008 State Farm/LHSAA State Outdoor Track and Field Meet to be held Saturday at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track and Field Stadium in Baton Rouge.

Riles continued her dominance taking the 100-meters (12.10), the 200 (25.05) and the 400 (56.52). This is the first year Riles has participated in the 400.

FHS senior Uzunma Udeh, the defending state champ in the triple jump, won the event (38-09). Udeh also took third place in the long jump (17-10.50). Lady Bulldogs’ senior Cara Wells earned first place in the shot put (40-01). FHS’ Faron Hennault came in second in the pole vault (9-03), and was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.63). Elisha Tarbell took second in the 800-meters (2:19.40), while Jessica Day was second in the high jump (5-03). Amy Deeble finished second in the 3,200-meters (12:04.51), and was fifth in the 1,600 (5:34.42), while teammate Kelly O’Mahoney finished third in the 300-meter hurdles (48.34).

St. Scholastica Academy’s Angela Laborde was a double-winner helping lead the Doves to their sixth place finish. Laborde captured the 1,600-meters (5:22.16) and the 3,200 (11:51.83). Lauren Salles came in third in the 800-meters (2:21.31) followed by teammate Kate Harlan (2:27.14). Molly Severson was fourth in the pole vault (J9-03).

Mandeville’s Nicole Freeman won the javelin (123-07) edging out teammate Jenna Baker (123-00) to lead the Lady Skippers to their seventh place finish. MHS’ Katherine Cade was third in the 3,200-meters (12:08.68).

Northshore’s Richelle Saluga was second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.28). Saluga was fifth in the 300 hurdles (48.51). Rachel Holman was fourth in the shot put (34.11).

Covington’s Gloria Darby took third in the shot put (37-08.50) and was fifth in the discus (104.03) to score all eight of the Lady Lions’ points.

Slidell’s Bianca Navarre came in fourth in the discus (107-01) to score the Lady Tigers’ four points.

100-meters: 6. Crawford, SSA, 12.55.

4x200-meter relay: 6. NHS, 1:50.06.

4x400-meter relay: 5. NHS, 4:09.17.

High jump: 5. Williams, SSA, J5-01.

Triple jump: 5. Giroir, MHS, 35-03.50.

Javelin: 6. Williams, SSA, 101-10.

In the boys’ Class 5A Region II competition, Northshore junior Justin Walker helped lead the Panthers to a fifth place finish with 43 points. He was named the Track MVP. Catholic High won the title with 106 points followed by St. Amant (61.50). Dutchtown and Scotlandville (46) tied for third.

Fontainebleau (35) garnered a seventh place finish with Slidell (24) in ninth place. Covington (10) and Mandeville (10) tied for 16th. St. Paul’s (2) rounded out the field.

Walker was named the Track MVP. He won the 100-meters (10.67), and took second in the 200 (21.50) just seven-tenths of a second behind the winner. Walker also ran the anchor leg on the Panthers’ victorious 4x200-meter relay team (1:28.13), which established a school record. The team consisted of Walker, David Barry, Phillip Fleming and Lanston Elzie. The Panthers’ Chris Faulk took first in the discus (146-04).

Northshore coach Chad Gainey said Walker ran well.

“Justin is running strong at the right time. He is a special athlete. They don’t make them that fast very often. I won’t count on getting any more like him,” Gainey said.

Fontainebleau’s Jeff Sanders, an Aubrun signee, helped the Bulldogs to a seventh place finish taking second in the 1,600-meters (4:23.42), and was fifth in the 800 (1:59.16).

Sanders also ran the second leg of the Bulldogs’ second place 4x400-meter relay team (3:23.37). The other team members included Carey Gagnard, Zach Harris and Blake Satterlee. The Bulldogs’ Satterlee took second in the 400-meters (48.88), while Aaron Moore was third in the javelin (183-07).

Slidell’s Zach Johnson came in third in the 400-meters (48.90) to help lead the Tigers to their ninth place position. Johnson also ran the anchor leg on the Tigers’ second place 4x200-meter relay team (1:29.45). The other members were Donald Cousins, Ryan Tott and Romero Garcia. Zach France finished fourth in the 3,200-meters (10:12.86). Armand Williams was fourth in the high jump (J6-03). Alvin McKinnis was sixth in the triple jump (43-04), while Rob Culberson took sixth in the shot put (48-11) for the Tigers.

Mandeville’s Casey Revere won the javelin (188-04) to score the Skippers’ 10-points. Covington’s top scorer was Otis Jacobs, who finished third in the triple jump (45-05) with Deron Talley taking fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.19).

St. Paul’s Stephen Traina-Dorge finished fifth in the pole vault to earn the Wolves’ points.

3,200-meters: 5. Fischer, FHS, 10:24.78.
