If you graduated from Slidell High School anytime in the last 100 years, the school’s Centennial Committee wants to hear from you.

The committee is recording oral histories of past times at Slidell High for a video documentary. According to Margie Packer, a member of the 50-Year Club, the group has only recorded about 25 alumni stories so far.

“We’re trying to record a number of people from each decade, as far back as we can go,” said Packer. “Last month I sent out about 200 e-mails, asking for people to send in their stories in writing, and I’ve gotten maybe 10 responses.” Stories must be submitted by July 1. The documentary will be aired on closed circuit televisions at the school and is just one part of the plans under way for the centennial celebration, set to culminate in a reception to be held at the school on March 28, 2009. The group hopes to have exhibits of period clothing and vintage automobiles on hand as well.

The committee also plans to install a centennial garden in front of the school and is offering commemorative bricks to mark the occasion.

A price is yet to be determined, but Packer expects the cost to be determined soon. The bricks will be sold at the July 4 Heritage Festival and will be similar to those laid out at Heritage Park.

In addition, a design context was recently held among current SHS students to create an official celebration T-shirt. Another contest, open to the public, is being held to create a poster for the celebration.

The poster must include the title “100 Years of Excellence: Slidell High School, 1909-2009,” and use the theme “Traditions Touching Today.” Size must not exceed 18 inches by 24 inches, and artwork must be submitted unframed. A $250 prize and a ribbon will be awarded.
