Unemployment rate third highest in St. Tammany, report says

Trailing only New Orleans and Jefferson parishes, St. Tammany experienced the region’s third highest unemployment claims for the week ending May 3rd, according to state Labor Department data recently released.

With 218 claims in Jefferson and 164 in New Orleans, St. Tammany registered 97, according to the data. Of those remaining, St. John posted 36 claims, St. James and St. Charles tied at 22 and Plaquemines registered 8.

In all, the New Orleans region, including St. Tammany, posted the second highest number of first-time claims in the state, according to the data. Jefferson Parish, however, posted the highest first time unemployment claim rate in the state.

Meanwhile, claims for unemployment insurance decreased statewide from 2,581 to 2,458 for the week ending May 3. In the year-ago period that number was 2,378.

The area consisting of Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne posted 65 claims, the lowest in Louisiana.
