Shavers-Whittle Construction of Covington was chosen as one of eight local small businesses to compete for a $100 million contract for south Louisiana levee, floodwall and pump station work.

The federal money pot filtered through the New Orleans Army Corps of Engineer comes courtesy of the Hubzone Multiple Award Task Order, a national program that recognizes small businesses in historically underused business zones.

“The Army Corp of Engineers has been and always will be committed to supporting local small businesses,” said Ned Foley, specialist of the Corps’ Small Business Programs Office.

The contract work for the Corps also includes road development, bridge work and armoring protection.

Other companies chosen for consideration are Clark Construction of St. Martinville; Hamp’s Construction of New Orleans; Phylway Construction of Thibodaux; Merrick Construction of Cottonport; Bucktown Contractors & Co. of Kenner; Cycle Construction of Kenner and Purnell Construction of Baton Rouge.
