Covington Trailhead opens Friday

The long-awaited Covington Trailhead will be officially opened Friday with a ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m.

The new Trailhead is located at the corner of East Lockwood and North New Hampshire streets in downtown Covington.

Randy Aultman, architect of the project, has designed the “train depot” motif building in keeping with the historic district’s 19th and early 20th century architecture.

As part of the celebration, Eric Nye, cycling instructor certified by the League of American Bicyclists, will offer cycling safety information. “Enjoy the Ride” an essential bicycling skills film produced by League of American Bicyclists, will also be shown along with a bike display. The celebration will also include door prizes and musical entertainment.

The new facility will be the permanent home of Covington’s economic development office and the Wednesday Farmer’s Market. There are also plans for a visitor’s center in the future that will contain an amphitheater, educational film and interactive kiosks.

The Wednesday Farmer’s Market will open at the site in June from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Jan Biggs, spokesperson for the Farmer’s Market, said there will be produce and plants for sale as well as music every Wednesday. In addition, she said there will be prepared food available every week with a possible “Blue Plate Special” available.
