Sixth-graders at Carolyn Park Middle School in Slidell ended the school year on a positive note by teaming up with the Northshore Boulevard Wal-Mart for a recycling program.

Called the Personal Sustainability Project, the program started earlier this spring and aims to engage youngsters in activities that help create a more sustainable environment.

The store provided containers and arranged for pickup, while the students collected paper, plastic and metal items from home and school for recycling.

Carolyn Park Middle School teacher Geri Winzy'€™s homeroom class won the contest for collecting the most recycled items. Shown are, from left, first row: Chelsea Causey, Joseph Harris and Brian Harris; second row: Andre Sigsworth, Colin Johnson, Cody Jarrell, Chrisele Sterling, Rachel Zanco and Hannah Hutchinson; third row: Raven Naylor, Makayla Charles, Bryan Wiley, Nicholas Altman, Ian Singletary, Emily Sisk and Ebony Clark; and fourth row: Magan Mannion, Palmer Cox, Rayion Williams, Messianjan Burgos, Christopher Lehmann, Caitlin Pinto, Mitchell Rogers, Geri Winzy and Principal Tony Esposito.

'€œThe students learned what types of items can be recycled and how important it is to our community,'€ said Shelly Bogran, director of the school'€™s computer lab. '€œEveryone benefited from this great program.'€

Geri Winzy'€™s homeroom class brought in the most recycled products and won a pizza party for their efforts, filling two large pickup trucks with recycling bags on the final collection day.

PSP Team Leader Jolie Levron said the students'€™ enthusiasm was contagious, and they hope to have the program for the entire school year starting next fall.

Wal-Mart also donated $500 to the school for its participation in the project.
