“Plaque Attack” was the theme of National Children’s Dental Health Month activities held throughout St. Tammany Parish during February.

Local dentists who are members of the Northlake Dental Association visited first grade classrooms to teach the youngsters about proper tooth brushing and flossing techniques and the importance of choosing healthy snacks.

Several video movies are also used to explain how tooth decay forms and what to expect during a visit to the dentist’s office.

Students were provided with toothbrushes, dental floss, bookmarkers, stickers and pamphlets about tooth brushing and flossing.

In addition to school visits, the NDA, the local constituent society of the American Dental Association, invited first graders at all local schools to participate in a poster contest focusing on good oral hygiene habits.

This year’s winner was Joshua Lee, a student at Northlake Christian School. Joshua received a T-shirt and a gift certificate for pizza for his family.

The whole first grade class will also receive a pizza party for its participation.

Other winners were Emma Bice, Colby Deselles and Cayleigh Mosbey.

The posters illustrated good oral hygiene, eating healthy snacks and visiting the dentist twice a year.

Other participating dentists were Drs. Glen Spell, Shelby Gebbs-Posner, Roy Grob, Brad Grand, Melinda Hickey, Marija LaSalle, Ronald Madere, William LeDoux, Louis Passauer, and Astrid Bratcher.
