St. Tammany Parish is sponsoring the Louisiana Clean Marina workshop Tuesday, June 17, for all 20 marina owners in St. Tammany Parish.

The program from 10 a.m. to noon at the St. Tammany Parish Council chambers on Koop Drive in Mandeville aims to educate owners on management practices and ways to reduce pollution and improve coastal water protection.

“We have over 20 marinas in St. Tammany,” Parish President Kevin Davis said. “The protection of all our waterways is vital to our parish, both in terms of the economy and recreation for our citizens. This Clean Marina program is another way we can make the preservation of the environment a priority in St. Tammany Parish.”

Those who participate will be certified as a “Clean Marina” by state government. The certification then may be used as a logo in advertising and on marina flags. The businesses may also be promoted on a “Clean Marina” Web site.

The certification process ensures that such a marina strives to reduce pollution in Louisiana waterways.

The workshop is organized by the St. Tammany Parish Department of Engineering and has expanded from years past to include presentations by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, LSU Ag Center and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

For more information on the program and the workshop, participants should call Lisa Landry at the St. Tammany Department of Engineering at 898-2552.
