Members of the Slidell community are hoping a raffle drawing on Friday will help a local mother offset the mountain of expenses she’s accumulated due to cancer treatment.

Carolina Del Rio was first diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer last September. The following month she underwent surgery, but now the cancer has returned.

Del Rio, a housewife, is the mother of five children and is also raising a niece. On occasion she has helped her husband, Edward, gut homes for renovation, but she has been unable to work for the last several months due to her illness.

“She still wants to get out and help him, but she just can’t right now,” said Anna Del Rio, one of the pair’s three daughters. “She’s really tired of having to stay home and feel sick.”

Her mother is currently undergoing chemotherapy and will soon start radiation treatments. It is expected she will require treatment five days a week.

Daughter Anna works in the office where her mother is being treated and said it is especially hard to see what cancer patients go through and to know it is now happening in her family.

She said her family has no history of cancer, so her mother’s diagnosis came as a shock.

Raffle prizes include two gas cards valued at $100 each and a $50 gift card to Chili’s Grill and Bar. Tickets are $1 per chance or six for $5, and winners need not be present to claim their prize. Call 641-8086 to purchase a ticket, or stop by the office of Dr. Clinton Sharp at 1051 Gause Blvd., Suite 380 in Slidell.
