The Northshore Tennis Association’s National Junior and Mr. Pee Wee development tennis program for boys and girls, ages 4-13, was held on private and public courts in the Covington and Mandeville area during the 2007-2008 school year. This school year, the first part of the week, play took place at Covington’s Kehoe-France Northshore School-Camp tennis court unless poor weather moved play inside the full-size gym. Mandeville has two lighted courts in the park behind City Hall that were also used.

The play and practice began with private or semi-private sessions to familiarize youngsters with tennis terms, stroke production and procedures.

After reaching a comfort zone, participants moved to a five-session level of clinics with drills, strategy, and competitive singles, doubles, and mixed doubles followed by actual tournament play.

The Mr. Pee Wee tennis program for boys and girls, age levels 4-7, is a slow but direct curriculum of stroke production, position and tennis rules with competitive exercises simulating match play and scoring.

The Junior program, age levels 8-13, is a stronger schedule of events in line with the same courses available to Mr. Pee Wee’s.

Sebastien Shays won the 7 years and under title with Sophia Brechtel second followed by Scott Woodard. Hadlee Calvert captured the 10 and under championship with Jack Verret second and Trey Celentano coming in third. Cameron Dauterive earned the 12 and under championship with Eathan Rodriguez second and Michael Donovan in third.
