Five-run seventh propels Cubs by Hood Chevrolet

The Slidell Cubs’ Nick Jones hit a three-run homer to left, capping a five-run seventh in a 5-3 victory over Hood Chevrolet (Fontainebleau High) Monday at the Bone Yard.

The Cubs trailed 3-0 after six innings but came to life in the seventh. David Nolting was hit and Lance Swearns walked. Both moved up on a passed ball, and Jordan Olsen drew a base on balls to load the bases. Aaron Blue then drew an RBI walk to make it 3-1. Following a strikeout, Jimmy Wentworth collected an RBI groundout to first. Jones came up next with the game-winning homer. He finished with two of the Cubs’ three hits. E.J. Blue had the other Slidell hit.

Aaron Blue got the win in relief of Jones, throwing three innings of one-hit ball. Jones gave up one unearned run in four innings of work.

Hood Chevrolet took a 1-0 lead in the first. Scott Malaschak singled, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Logan Peterson’s RBI groundout.

Hood Chevrolet added two more in the sixth. Brennan Marque was hit, Malaschak reached on a Cubs miscue. Following a bunt, Marque on a passed ball. Then Will Ward walked, but took off for second. As he was stealing, Malaschak scored the final run for Hood Chevrolet.

Malaschak, Derek Acosta, David Fiegel and Shawn Lockhart accounted for the Hood Chevrolet hits.
