Residents of Lighting District No. 5 in east St. Tammany will be asked this October to renew a 10-year property tax for maintaining street lights on roads, highways and alleys.

A favorable vote will continue to cost residents of French Branch Estates, in the parish’s Eighth Ward, roughly 5 mills a year. The tax would allow the district to collect roughly $20,000 a year from 2010 to 2019 to fund and maintain electric lights on streets, roads, highways, alleys and public places within the district. The district’s current 5-mill collection is set to expire next year, hence the renewal.

Last week, the Parish Council approved a resolution calling for the election on Saturday, Oct. 4. The special election is subject to approval by the state Bond Commission, but that move is considered a formality.

District No. 5 was established in 1979 and is one of 11 lighting districts parishwide.
