Take me out to the ball game

The Zephyrs favorite number mascot, Boudreaux, was on hand at the Covington Post Office to help celebrate the release of the “Take me out to the ball game” stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the song.

Jack Norworth wrote the song in 1908 and it’s still gaining in popularity, sung by baseball fans everywhere as part of the seventh inning stretch and other baseball related activities. Other items available at the post office include tote bags and pins with the stamp’s artwork on them. The stamp’s 42-cent price is part of the artwork on a baseball in the middle of the stamp. The players on the stamp are dressed in early 20th century uniforms with no protective gear.

For the celebration at the post office, an entourage of fans surrounded Boudreaux, enjoying popcorn and the upbeat atmosphere. Loretta Credo, supervisor at the post office, was giving away pins of the stamp and popcorn to visitors.

In addition, the post office is conducting a “Help Pitch in for Baseball” campaign and is collecting used baseball equipment including bats, gloves and balls. They are donating the equipment to the non-profit organization Pitch in for Baseball.

The group helps spread the game around the world through the donation of equipment.
