A group of golfers who belong to a league called the Retired Old Boys is looking for retired gentlemen golfers.

The Oak Harbor Gators began play on July 1 and currently has 18 members with a goal of 40.

The team competes in tournaments twice a month for $35 a golfer, mostly on Tuesdays or Thursdays. The Gators play at 11 other courses within a 60-mile radius in places like Covington, Amite and Picayune, Miss.

During the tournaments, the team plays a one-day 18-hole handicap competition with a meal and prizes to follow. Those awarded are usually given gift certificates to pro shops. The amount depends on the number of entries and where you finish.

The Gators also hold team competitions every weekday morning from 9-9:30 on Tuesdays and 7:30-8 a.m. on the other days. This goes toward the league handicap.

Some of the benefits to joining the Gators are unlimited golf and cart Monday-Friday, unlimited practice with range balls seven days a week and special fees for spousal memberships.

The Gators will hold a “Let’s Get Acquainted” Tournament Sept. 12 beginning at 7:45 a.m. at Oak Harbor. Cost is $15 for members and $35 for non-members. The fee includes golf, cart, practice balls, prizes, lunch, coffee and doughnuts.

The format is a four-man scramble. Men will play from the gold tees, while women will compete from the red.

Oak Harbor Gator president Stacy Bragg talked about the reason for having the team.

“I’m looking for a group of people, retired golfers who really want to share a joint venture of group golfing activities,” Bragg said. “Our main objective is to have fun and have a place where you can spend quality time with quality people.”

If you are interested in joining the Oak Harbor Gators call Bragg at 643-8981 or e-mail him at stacydad246@aol.com. You can also call vice president Lou Allen at 649-5883 or e-mail him at elja51@netzero.com.
