Hospital'€™s File of Life could saves lives By Debbie GloverSt. Tammany News Allergies, previous illnesses and current medical conditions can each be the difference between life and death in an emergency. This is why St. Tammany Parish Hospital created the File of Life. Hospital spokesperson Melissa Hodgson said the File of Life is important, especially for older patients who may live alone, but it is a good idea for everyone. Hodgson recommends having two cards — one for the refrigerator and one to be carried in a wallet or purse. This way, in case of an accident inside or outside the home, the pertinent health information is readily available. This can especially be important if the patient is unconscious. The card contains a place for information such as allergies, current medications, medical conditions, emergency contacts and medical insurance information. There is even a space for preferred doctor and hospital. Emergency medical technicians and first responders are often called upon to transport someone to a hospital for treatment in case of an accident or health emergency. In order to help, it is crucial that the responder have the right tools to help the patient or accident victim in need of medical attention. By carrying and displaying the File of Life, someone with allergies to medications or someone with medical conditions or diseases can be treated without threatening an existing condition or accidentally triggering an allergic reaction. Measuring 12 inches long and 5 inches wide, the cards are folded and placed into the 3- by 5-inch red magnetic vinyl envelopes. They were recently distributed at COAST’s senior resource festival and can be obtained at St. Tammany Parish Hospital or by calling 898-4176. The card and magnetized file are free. Fire Protection District 1 in Slidell recently began a similar program, Vial of LIFE. |
