St. Tammany Parish School Superintendent Gayle Sloan was the special guest at the Covington Night Out Against Crime celebration Tuesday at the Greater Covington Center. As part of the festivities, Sloan was presented a proclamation and a bouquet of roses honoring her for her efforts and involvement in this year’s event.

“Safety and our quality of life, working together, is what is important to us in St. Tammany Parish,” Sloan said.

Covington residents from various neighborhoods, both young and old, enjoyed the activities, refreshments and camaraderie. As a special activity, children were invited to make get well cards for alligator bite victim Devin Funck. Flowers and get well greetings adorned the construction paper cards. Games such as fishing, ring toss and pony rides kept children busy throughout the evening. Both young and old enjoyed the music as everyone joined in for line dancing and a bit of hip-hop, country, rock and pop. The Covington Police and Fire departments were on hand, demonstrating equipment and distributing information, including a tour of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit truck, fire truck and a special fire house designed to teach safety in smoke-filled rooms and houses.

Police Chief Richard Palmisano thanked everyone for attending and said, “This event is a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and for police officers to get to mingle with citizens on a social basis. Getting your support helps us keep the community safe.”
