Pope John Paul II 2008 graduate Amanda Maurin was a three-sport athlete for the Lady Jaguars, playing basketball, golf and volleyball.

In her senior year, she helped the volleyball team to a 22-7 record after a 6-21 mark the year before. The Lady Jags made it all the way to the state quarterfinals before falling to Louise McGehee, 25-18, 7-25, 25-14, 25-20, as a fourth seed in the Pontchartrain Center.

In basketball, Maurin got the opportunity to play in postseason, and it was the Lady Jaguars’ first trip there since 1985. PJP fell in the first round, 63-56, against Many.

During the district season, Maurin nearly averaged a double-double with 21.6 points per game, 9.9 rebounds, while adding 2.6 steals and 1.3 assists.

Maurin also excelled in the classroom with a 4.58 grade point average, which earned her valedictorian honors. She made a 29 on her ACT. PJP coach Charlie Baird said he enjoyed coaching Maurin.

“She was a coach’s dream as far as a player,” Baird said. “She was a good worker and an effective leader. You could always count on her. She was a straight ‘A’ student off the court and gave 110 percent on the court. The kids looked up to her. She had a lot of talent, but she worked hard for it, and it paid off in the end.”

What do you enjoy most about playing your sports? I enjoyed the family atmosphere. If I had not played sports, I wouldn’t have had that.

What do you like best about being a student athlete? I like the challenge. Academics come first, but knowing that I was part of a team was a challenge I enjoyed.

Do you feel an added responsibility of being a role model as a student athlete? Definitely, academics come first and I tried to set an example for the younger kids with that.

Most memorable game/accomplishment or situation in sports? In a tie-breaking game to have a chance at third place in the district against St. Helena, I had just come back from a cruise and I hit the game-tying layup in regulation. The game went to double-overtime, and we won 62-58. (Maurin scored 28 points in the victory with 24 rebounds, five assists and four steals. She posted 19 points between the second half and overtime periods.)

Who has been the most influential person in your school sports career? My parents, Michael and Kelly Maurin, because they were always there to make sure my grades were top notch. They always encouraged me even if I didn’t have a good game.

Who is your favorite athlete? New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees.

Favorite team? New Orleans Saints.

What is your favorite subject in school? Chemistry.

Plans after high school/college major? I’m going to LSU and plan on majoring in kinesiology with a concentration in physical therapy.

Favorite sports movie/TV show/actor/actress? “Bring it On,” “The Office,” Channing Tatum and Reese Witherspoon.

Favorite type of music? I listen to everything, but I like hip-hop.

Favorite food dish? Cheeseburger and french fries.

Best vacation? We took a cruise to Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Cozumel in February with a group of about 30 people, including my family.

Best thing about living on the Northshore? I like the suburb environment and how you can get to everything in 10-15 minutes.

Hobbies/interests/volunteering: I enjoy jet skiing, sports and outside adventure activities. I did Slidell cleanup after Hurricane Katrina. I also worked at the St. Margaret Mary camp for two years, and I donate blood.

Parents: Michael and Kelly Maurin of Slidell.
