Today’s effort, the fourth such campaign since March, is aimed to change driver behavior in what Sheriff Jack Strain calls the No. 1 complaint from area residents.
“The most common complaint received by the Sheriff’s Office is excessive speeding and adherence to traffic signs in subdivisions,” Strain said. “These complaints come from every area of the parish.”

“We’re hearing talk on the streets from motorists that say, ‘Yea, I need to slow down. I know you guys are out there,’” Bonnett said. “That’s what we are going for. If (the public) knows we are going to be out there, that’s half the battle.”
Operation Safe Streets” first debuted March 20 when roughly 50 deputies fanned out in 25 subdivisions throughout the parish.
By day’s end, 919 tickets were written, but Strain called the operation a failure and vowed to continue the effort.
Strain said despite the heavy presence of deputies, driving behavior didn’t change, evident with at least one speeder who received a ticket leaving for work and another on his way home. Strain then issued Phase II that includes four days of crackdowns with 18-20 deputies patrolling the streets.
Today’s crackdown is scheduled from 6-11 a.m. and 1-6 p.m. Another is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16.
