'Raise the Roof' funds dispersed to 11 charities

The St. Tammany Home Builders Association distributed $250,000 to 11 charities as a result of the “Raise the Roof” fundraising raffle held this spring.

At its luncheon meeting Tuesday, the HBA distributed checks of $12,441 each to STARC, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Reserves, St. Tammany Parish Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Slidell Adult Day Care, Safe Harbor, Dream Factory and The Caring Center. The Mental Health Association of St. Tammany and the American Red Cross each received $24,882. The Tammany Trace Foundation received $49,764, and Support Our War Heroes received $62,206.

Barbara Martin, administrative assistant for the Home Builders Association, said the selection committee determines which charities will be included and the percentage of the net proceeds they will receive.

For the 2009 event, the charities have already been selected. All the charities for this year will be included with one addition — Northshore Families Helping Families, said Martin.

Only 5,000 tickets are sold at $100 each to raise money for the charities.

The raffle winner of the house was Andra Martin. The house, built by Varuso Homes on a lot donated by the Wainer Brothers, is located at 774 Place St. Etienne in the Normandy Oaks subdivision in Covington and valued at $300,000. The house has 2913 square feet under beam with 2202 square feet of living space. It includes four bedrooms, three baths and a double garage.

Other raffle winners included Jean Pacaccio, Saints football and a VISA card; A. J. and Anne Cigali, Webber grill and Wal Mart card; Laura Pontiff, Louisiana Basket and VISA Card; Larry Wilcher, Copeland’s gift card; Alex Balducci Jr., Target gift card; Teri Peck, Fleur de Lis silver gift set; Kellie and Barry Mayer, Wal Mart gift card; and Sal A. Tramuta, Sal & Judy’s gift card.
