HBO filiming comedy shows in Mandeville By Chad RuizSt. Tammany News HBO is coming to Mandeville. Its mission, to film the Black Renaissance Comedy Tour at Benedict’s Plantation at 1144 N. Causeway Blvd., and you’re invited. Tickets are $25 and $50 and can be purchased in advance through the Gut-Buster Comedy Room at (504) 915-1892 or at the door. Show times will be 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Webster’s dictionary defines renaissance as a “humanistic revival of a classic art, intellectual or artistic achievement and vigor based in Europe during the 14 through 16 centuries, and considered an expansive time of intellect, thought and discovery.” When it comes to comedy, the Black Renaissance Comedy Tour is just that, a true comedy revival going back to the beginning, before artistic thought was diluted or distorted by present day infusions. Four comedians, D.T. Owens, Quevaughn Bryant, Kurt Green and Marvin Lee, with a combined 60 years of experience, will take you on a non-stop laugh fest that touches all aspects of our lives. Having performed for audiences across the globe, these seasoned performers are on a mission to take you on a comedic journey that everyone can relate to with subject matter ranging from relationships and dating to taxes and the constitution, the nostalgic look at family life to esoteric observations and song parodies. “This show runs through all that is Americana, tickling it with a feather as it passes by,” Terry Comeaux with the Gut Buster Comedy Room said. “The increasing success of this vent is primarily attributed to one thing, the comedians are being themselves.” Comeaux also said the quartet have fun performing down-home comedy versus the one-dimensional caricatures that Hollywood and the media have projected onto America, filled with the “N” word and constantly referring to women in derogatory terms.
