SSA awards spring atheletes

St. Scholastica Academy recently held its spring athletic awards banquet featuring bowling, golf, outdoor track, softball, and tennis.

The bowling team went to the playoffs for the third year in a row coached by Pete Bertucci. They were district and regional champions and went to the quarterfinals in the state tournament. Four SSA team members were named All-District: Melanie Dutel, Tori Powers, Elise Prete, and Alix St. Pe’. The awards for bowling were; Most Improved-Alix St. Pe’, Most Points Scored–Melanie Dutel and High Series Award-Tori Powers.

The golf team coached by Jay Banks and assisted by Bill Gallop qualified second in district and had one State Qualifier–Monica Caire. The golf awards were: Most Improved–Ashley Authement, MVP–Monica Caire and the Coach’s Award–Lauren Barattini.

The awards for the varsity outdoor track coached by Kristi Becerra, Melissa Jones, and Victoria Simon were District runner-ups, sixth in Regionals, and eighth in State with four state qualifiers. The awards were: Angela LaBorde-State champion, Lauren Salles–third in state. Kate Harlan and Michele Seippel–state alternates. Varsity awards went to MVP Track-Angela LaBorde and Lauren Salles, Kate Harlan was Most Improved and Clare Ledoux was given the Coach’s Award. Maury Williams was named MVP Field and Ashley Vorenkamp was Most Improved.

The awards for the junior varsity track team coached by Becerra and Simon were; Most Improved in Track–Catherine Pereira, Most Improved in Field–Sara Kuebel. The Coach’s Award went to Sarah Thiel for track and Tristan Doyle in field.

The awards for the eighth grade track and field coached by Victoria Simon were Most Improved-Hadley Modeen, Amanda Salles and Anna Thorson.

The varsity softball team coached by Charles Richard, Chris Pool and Susan Calloway, finished the season competing in the bi-district playoffs. District Honors went to first team All District–Madeline Commander and Lauren Fereday, second team All District–Brandi Giarrusso and Kristi Harrison, first outfielder All District–Brittney Thompson; All District Honorable Mention–Cristina Perez de la Mesa. The awards for the varsity softball team were: Outstanding Player Award – Madeline Commander and Brittney Thompson; Most Valuable Player–Lauren Fereday.

The tennis team coached by Barbara Fisher and Susan Boudreaux Loesberg’68 won third place in state.

The state finalists were Kellie Gutterman and Shelby Fritscher; state qualifiers were Margaret Bankston, Margaret Rivera and Elise Michaelis, Fritscher and Gutterman were Regional Champions and state finalist.

The tennis team individual awards were: Most Valuable Players–Shelby Fritscher and Kellie Gutterman and Coach’s Award–Elise Michaelis.
