The St. Tammany Steelsharks will take on the Louisiana Blazin Bulldogs in a battle of undefeated teams at William Pitcher Junior High School Saturday afternoon with kickoff slated for 4:30.

Both minor league teams of the Southern American Football League enter the game as the only squads with 3-0 records this season. There are two other unbeatean teams in the Baton Rouge Riverboat Bandits (3-0-1) and the New Orleans Gladiators (2-0-1), who the Steelsharks will play the next two games.

The loser of Saturday’s tilt could drop all the way to fourth place.

The top eight teams go to the playoffs and the top four get a home game in the first round.

St. Tammany general manager Lee Hillman encourages a big crowd to see a contest involving the two best teams in the SAFL to this point.

“I’d love to see the fans come out and support us,” Hillman said. “I think we have a solid core of players and our guys are very hungry.”

The bulk of St. Tammany’s players competed at local high schools on the Eastside of the parish.

The Steelsharks won their opener, 30-6, over the Hammond Headhunters, which was followed by a pair of forfeit wins against Houston and Southwest Louisiana Spartans.

Steven Sylves, a 2005 Pearl River graduate, rushed for two touchdowns (8 and 12 yards) in the opener.

Slidell High graduate Dustin Moreau will likely get the start, but no matter what, 2007 Pearl River High graduate Jesse Williams will see playing time.

Sylves said he has not been able to see Moreau play, but said he likes what he has seen out of Williams.

“He’s a solid quarterback,” Sylves said. “He has a nice release and puts a good touch on the ball.”

Defensively, the Steelsharks base out of a 4-4. Middle linebacker Jamien Simms, a 2006 Salmen graduate, put up four sacks in the first victory. He said it’s been tough not competing the last couple games.

“It’s a big game because we haven’t played for the last two weeks,” Simms said. “We’re tired of waiting to get to the next game.”

Tickets for the game are $7 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 and 5-under are free.
