In honor of National Aviation Day, the Slidell Municipal Airport at the end of Airport Road will have a ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the airport’s lobby.
The ceremony will establish the Slidell Airport Wall of Fame to honor those individuals who have contributed to the growth of the aviation industry in the area.
National Aviation Day, which is Aug. 19, is part of National Aviation Week, which is celebrated Aug. 17–23. National Aviation Day was created by presidential proclamation in 1939 to honor the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers on Dec. 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, N.C. The reason it is celebrated in August is because Orville Wright’s birthday is Aug. 19.
During the Slidell ceremony, two individuals who contributed to the growth of aviation in Slidell will be honored. Peter Pravata will be honored posthumously for building Pravata Airpark in 1944 on the site of the current Carolyn Park subdivision. Also honored with be Perry Samrow, who is Slidell Airport’s first flight instructor and has taught flying for more than 40 years.
