Pearl River’s Rebels traveled to Newman Friday to scrimmage the Greenies before their season gets under way Friday night with a jamboree in Chalmette.

The format was a set of 10 plays for the first teamers followed by a set of eight plays for the starters.

Then the second-team participants took the field and did the same thing.

Each drive began on the 30-yard line.

Pearl River coach Joe Harris said junior running back James Gillum, who had 2,213 yards last season, carried the ball 10 times, while gaining 80 yards.

Harris said he was happy with the way the entire squad performed throughout the scrimmage.

“I thought we played well on both sides of the football,” Harris said. “We’re an improved football team.”

Harris added how impressed he was with the defense.

“The defense tackled well, and we ran to the ball well,” he said.
