Ladner's blocked punt sets Pearl River up for jamboree win

Pearl River junior Blake Ladner blocked a Salmen punt with 1:44 left in the second half, leading to a game-winning touchdown by Will Reed in a 13-7 victory during the first game of the Northshore Jamboree Friday.

Curtis edges Mandeville; FHS topsHoly Cross

The 2008 prep football season got under way Friday night on the Northshore with an eerily feeling of a not to distant Friday night three years earlier when another visitor from the south was threatening our area. Because of Hurricane Gustav, the host Mandeville Skippers will not be traveling as expected to Texas to take on Klein Oak on Labor Day in Texas Stadium.

Covington blanks Pine to give Scobel initial win

The Covington Fighting Lions opened their new era under head coach Malter Scobel in lopsided fashion Friday night, blanking the Pine Raiders, 27-0, in the final game of the Covington Jamboree at Jack Salter Stadium.

NCS wins one game, other is scoreless

The Northlake Christian Wolverines continued preparation for their regular season Friday night by participating in the St. Martin’s Jamboree at Tony Porter Athletic Field in Metairie. The format for the jamboree called for the Wolverines to play one 15-minute game against the Lusher Lions, followed by a second 15-minute game against the St. Martin’s Saints.

Hannan tops Canadian team, falls to Livonia

The Archbishop Hannan Hawks bested the Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Cougars, 7-2, Friday night in the Livonia Jamboree. The Cougars, home based in Ajax, Ontario, Canada, made the trek to compete against the Hawks, who they met after a trip down south following Hurricane Katrina while helping during the recovery effort. Earlier in the week, the Cougars’ football players lent a helping hand with ongoing projects in New Orleans.

Games canceled after Gustav

The aftermath of Hurricane Gustav forced St. Tammany Parish Public Schools to cancel all weekend activities. The cancellation includes all sporting events and Friday night football. Regular activities will resume when school reopens on Monday.

Steelsharks down the Gladiators

St. Tammany Steelshark running back and 2005 Pearl River graduate Steven Sylvas ran for 139 yards on 12 carries and a score, helping his team to a 24-7 blowout win over the New Orleans Gladiators on Aug. 23 at William Pitcher Junior High School.

Wolves in action

St. Paul’s Wolves calling on creative scheduling and prowling enthusiasm have managed to find a way to play a football game this weekend, despite the major interruptions caused by the menacing Hurricane Gustav. Tomorrow night’s game is contingent upon both school’s athletic directors agreeing to a contract.
