Wolves in action

St. Paul’s Wolves calling on creative scheduling and prowling enthusiasm have managed to find a way to play a football game this weekend, despite the major interruptions caused by the menacing Hurricane Gustav. Tomorrow night’s game is contingent upon both school’s athletic directors agreeing to a contract.

The Wolves, the three-time defending District 7-5A champs, which finished 10-3 last year as a state quarterfinalist, will tee it up against the St. Thomas More Cougars tomorrow night at 7 in Hunter Stadium.

Wolves’ head coach Ken Sears said the original season opener scheduled for tonight against the John Ehret Patriots, coached by Billy North, had to be cancelled. The Patriots were unable to field enough players. Sears said coach North did his best to get the game in, but under the circumstances was unable to do so with his players scattered all over the place.

Sears said he and his staff had to do some scrambling, but were able to link up with St. Thomas More to play the game tomorrow night. Sears said commercial power had been returned to the St. Paul’s campus on Thursday.

St. Paul’s opened its season in the Covington High Jamboree last Friday, edging the Franklinton Demons, 7-6.

SPS sophomore running back Mikhail Washington scored the Wolves’ lone touchdown on a short run with Jake Saltalamacchia tacking on the extra point with 9:39 left in second 12-minute half.

Senior fullback Josh Pereira led the Wolves’ ground game in the jamboree with 42 yards on six carries, including a crucial 24-yard run to set up Washington’s score.

Sears said his defense played pretty well in the jamboree only giving up the one score against a fine Franklinton football team. The Demons finished last season with a 12-1 record with their only loss, coming in the quarterfinals against Bastrop, which ended up winning the Class 4A state title.
