The Archbishop Hannan Hawks bested the Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Cougars, 7-2, Friday night in the Livonia Jamboree. The Cougars, home based in Ajax, Ontario, Canada, made the trek to compete against the Hawks, who they met after a trip down south following Hurricane Katrina while helping during the recovery effort. Earlier in the week, the Cougars’ football players lent a helping hand with ongoing projects in New Orleans.

The Cougars jumped on top 2-0 after the Hawks fumbled the ball in the end zone while operating out of the shotgun. Trailing by the two-point deficit, Hawks’ junior quarterback Andrew Arceneaux found senior running back Adam Lewis for a 62-yard scoring strike with about three minutes remaining to snatch the victory. Senior Michael Tiziani booted the extra point.

Hannan second-year coach George Templet said it was an emotional win for his Hawks.

“We expended a lot of energy, playing with intensity. We were so geared up to play against someone else instead of beating up on each other that we went all out,” Templet said.

Templet said his defense played lights out, highlighting the play of sophomore defensive tackle Roy Pomes, who turned in several quarterback hurries and was credited with one sack.

“Offensively, we moved the ball but struggled to find consistency,” Templet said.

The host Livonia Wildcats blanked the Canadian club, 15-0, in the 15-minute opening game. The Wildcats Ivory Slaughter tallied on a 57-yard run. Livonia quarterback Justin Mingo tossed an 80-yard scoring pass to Jordan Armstead. The Wildcats’ Dustin Dixon added a two-point conversion.

Livonia and Hannan closed out the jamboree with the Wildcats blanking the Hawks, 21-0.

Hannan turned the ball over twice deep in its own territory when the punter mishandled the snaps resulting in Livonia points.

Templet credited Livonia with playing strong.

“Livonia is a very physical team on both sides of the ball. They get after you. We were physically and mentally exhausted going against a very good Livonia team,” Templet said.

Archbishop Hannan opens its regular season Friday night, hosting the Carver Rams. The game will be played at Hammond High School.
