Archbishop Hannan finally got its football season underway Thursday night on the road in New Roads, but unfortunately the Hawks ran across a tough Catholic High of Pointe Coupee squad, suffering a 46-12 loss.

The Hornets raced out to a 40-0 halftime margin, controlling the action from the start.

Archbishop Hannan committed four turnovers, losing two fumbles and two interceptions. Hannan second-year coach George Templet said his players were physically in shape, but weren’t sharp in their execution.

“We played very apprehensive. When you are not able to do anything practice wise for a week, it takes a lot out of you. Those missed practices hurt us,” Templet said.

Templet said his club now has to regroup and move forward, putting the game behind them. The Hawks take to the road again this Friday, traveling to Metairie to tackle the St. Martin’s Episcopal Saints with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Hannan senior tailback Adam Lewis turned in a strong effort for the Hawks, rushing the ball 13 times for 88 yards, producing both Hawks’ touchdowns.

Trailing 46-0, Lewis got the Hawks on the scoreboard, cashing in on a 33-yard run around right end midway through the fourth quarter.

The Hawks went for a two-point conversion, but were unsuccessful. On the ensuing kick off, Hannan was successful with an onside kick, which was recovered by Lewis just inside midfield. Lewis closed out the drive from the 28-yard line, sweeping around right end for the TD. The point after attempt was no good, closing out the scoring.

Templet said his club was without senior offensive tackle/defensive end Perry Degelos and senior tailback/cornerback Ethan Lopinto, who are nursing injuries.

Templet said his club missed the leadership and ability of those two players. He is unsure when they may return to the lineup. He praised the tough play of Lewis.

“Adam really stepped up. He did a great job, providing us with senior leadership. He gave us a tremendous effort,” Templet said.

Hawks’ junior quarterback Andrew Arceneaux hit on 9-of-23 attempts for 63 yards with two interceptions. The Hawks rushed the ball 38 times for 124 yards.

Hannan junior defensive end Logan Booksh was credited with blocking a Catholic High punt.
