FHS (1-0) opened the season Sept. 10 with an exciting, 30-28, home victory over the Jesuit Blue Jays. The Bulldogs hope to make it two in a row at the Dawg Pound, hosting the Douglass Bobcats, at 7 tonight.

FHS coach Gregg Hudson said his club got the season off on the right foot against Jesuit, picking up some key power points.

“We ran the ball the best in the two years that I have been here,” Hudson said.

The Bulldogs rushed for 265 yards with junior Perrin Sims carrying the ball 14 times for 128 yards.

Senior fullback Clay Fritscher also reached the 100-yard barrier with an even 100 yards on 11 carries.

Junior quarterback Addison Melancon ran an efficient offense, completing 8-of-13 passes for 64 yards. Hudson said his team passed the ball enough against Jesuit to keep the defense honest.

“We need to be efficient when passing the ball to complement our running game. Our players have a better knowledge of the offense,” Hudson said. “They are more comfortable in the system, and it shows. We need to continue to get better each week.”

Defensively, the Bulldogs made the plays when they needed to.

Junior safeties Greg Albers and Will Ward led the Bulldogs with four solo tackles each.

Senior defensive end Gerald Gruenig (6-3, 244) and senior tackle Darrel Brown (6-1, 262) were credited with two sacks each, keeping pressure on the Jesuit offense.

Junior cornerback Spencer Ragas was a catalyst on defense intercepting a pass, returning it 35 yards for a score in the third quarter, which helped secure the Bulldogs’ victory.

Sophomore Chris Fisher was credited with a recovered fumble for the Dawgs.

Hudson said Douglass has an athletic quarterback (Isameal Tribbit).

“If nobody is open, he’ll pull it down and run. They have good speed on offense, which concerns us,” Hudson said.

Terry Freeman is the first-year head coach of the Bobcats, which finished 1-9 last season. Freeman previously was the head coach at Kennedy High from 2000-2005.

Douglass (0-1) was blanked by the Chalmette Owls, 11-0, in Sunday’s season opener held at Chalmette.

Douglass gave up two safeties with Chalmette’s other score, coming following a fumble inside the Bobcats’ 5-yard line.

Freeman said he has a really young team with only three seniors.

“Our defense didn’t do a bad job against Chalmette. They gave a good effort. Some of our younger players picked up valuable experience against Chalmette. Those younger players need to continue to improve for us to be successful,” Freeman said.

Douglass is predominantly a running team with junior quarterback Tribbit (5-10, 185) signaling the Bobcats’ multiple set offense.

Sophomore Desmond Haley (5-11, 205) is Douglass’ top running back, while sophomore Dominique Jackson (5-8, 210) will also see time in the back field.

The Bobcats run a multiple defense led by junior middle linebacker Terry Williams (5-11, 185).
