Slidell Junior High’s Mike Cooper and Boyet’s Emanuel Terrell scored three touchdowns each in Slidell’s 28-26 overtime victory last Tuesday at Northshore.

Boyet coach David Polk estimated that Terrell had more than 100 yards, while Cooper ran for 54.

The Tigers improved to 2-0, while the Rebels (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

Slidell got out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Rawn Richardson caught a 25-yard pass from Jamil Evans to open scoring in the opening period. The run for the two-point conversion failed to keep it at 6-0.

In the second quarter, Cooper tallied his first touchdown as he returned a punt 63 yards and followed it with a two-pointer, giving his team the 14-0 advantage.

But Boyet fought back in the second as Matt Miquet received a 50-yard pass from Dylan Kelly.

The failed two-point conversion sent the teams to halftime with Slidell leading, 14-6.

Boyet wasn’t done yet as Terrell got into the scoring act with a 5-yard run and then followed with the two-point conversion, tying the game at 14-14.

On the ensuing kickoff, Cooper was at it again, bringing it back 72 yards. The run for two failed, and Slidell led, 20-14, after three quarters. In the fourth period, Boyet tied the game once again on a short run by Terrell.

The Rebels attempted to kick the PAT, but it was no good. Boyet had a chance to win the game in regulation as the Rebels got the ball down to the 1, but they could not score on the final play, which sent the game to overtime.

The extra session in junior high is played exactly like high school where both teams get the ball first-and-goal at the 10. Each team gets a possession, and the contest keeps going until an overtime period ends without a tie.

Slidell got the ball first and Cooper tallied on a 2-yard run. Evans’ completed pass to Richardson made it 28-20.

Cooper said he scored on a play up the middle.

“I really didn’t think I’d get in, but I pushed myself,” Cooper said. “Everybody was blitzing and coming at me, but I was able to find a hole to run through and I dove into the end zone.”

On Boyet’s possession, the Terrell got in from 3 yards out, but the two-pointer failed, as Slidell pulled out the victory.

Slidell coach Joey Brockhoff said it was a great game.

“Both teams played with everything they had,” Brockhoff said. “Give Boyet credit for coming back. They kept fighting. They made big plays when they needed them. By the same token, we made some big plays when we needed it. Mike Cooper ran the ball extremely hard for us.”

Boyet coach Polk, who has been the headman for three years and at the school for 13, said it was one of the better games he has seen.

“I thought it was a great game,” Polk said. “I was disappointed we didn’t score at the end, but I’m looking forward to playing them again (Oct. 20).”
