The defending Diviion II state champion Cabrini Crescents swept Salmen’s Lady Spartans, 25-3, 25-15, 25-5, in a district match held Tuesday at Salmen.

The Lady Spartans (2-7) are 0-2 in district play, while Cabrini (9-5) remained undefeated at 3-0.

Cabrini got out to a 6-0 lead in the first game, while opening the contest with a pair of kills from Alexis Robichaux.

Salmen then got on the board, but Robichaux got the momentum back for the Crescents by pounding another kill, which started a 13-0 run to make it 19-1.

The Lady Spartans tallied the next point and then another when trailing 22-2, but Cabrini was too much for Salmen in the first game, coasting to a 25-3 win.

The second game, like the first, saw Cabrini get out to a huge lead, this time 13-0. The Crescents had a shot that hit the net to give Salmen its first point.

Cabrini eventually went up 16-3, but then the Lady Spartans got things going and ran off four consecutive points. Kristan Campbell, who finished with two kills, blocked a Cabrini shot during the spurt.

Later in the game, Cabrini had a 22-10 advantage, but Salmen continued to battle and finished on a 5-3 run, but suffered a 25-15 setback.

Salmen first-year coach Kelly Cahill said her team played well in the second game after a bad beginning.

“It was definitely a tough start. The girls didn’t really have any confidence in themselves to do anything,” Cahill said. “It’s hard to get them motivated after a game like that, but they picked it up and realized they could hang with a team if they tried. The defense played well. Our serve-receive was pretty good, we just couldn’t put the ball away and that hurt us.”

Cahill talked about how she got her team going.

“I told the girls there’s only so much I can do. It has to come from inside. They’ve gotta want to win, play better and pick each other up. It can’t always come from me. It has to come from inside of them to want to play. It was a little bit of me, but mostly them,” Cahill said.

In the third game, Cabrini got out to a 3-0 lead, but Salmen got on the board to make it 3-1.

Robichaux got her opportunity to serve and with her team leading 6-1, recorded two consecutive aces. She finished with five.

Robichaux said her serving was good.

“I’m happy I got 13 over. I was mixing it up,” Robichaux said.

After Salmen got a sideout down 8-2, Erika Ybarzabal got one of her team-leading two aces, cutting the lead to 8-3.

After Ybarzabal’s second serve hitting the net, Kayla McGee pounded out two consecutive kills and tallied 10 for the match, while adding 10 blocks.

But it was all Cabrini after that in a 25-5 victory to take the match.

Ariel Lara led Salmen with eight digs, while Preslie Long along with Monique Pack posted five. Pack also dished out two assists. Crescent coach Greg Castillo said he was happy with his team’s performance.

“They played well. We cut down on the silly mistakes,” Castillo said. “I was able to get everybody in, but even the ones that got in that don’t play a lot, played well.”
