St. Paul’s, the defending District 7-5A champs, are focused on turning things around following last week’s disappointing, 17-0, district opening loss to the Mandeville Skippers at home.

Covington’s Fighting Lions look to rebound from last week’s disappointing 35-0 loss to the Slidell Tigers in their road district opener. Covington (1-2) is hosting the undefeated Ponchatoula Green Wave (3-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jack Salter Stadium. Ponchatoula snuck past Northshore 19-18 at home last week to open district play.

Pope John Paul II hosts Northlake
Pope John Paul II (2-1) hosts the Northlake Christian School Wolverines (1-2) tonight at Lester Latino Jaguar Field. The Jaguars are coming off a 20-0 homecoming victory over the Sarah T. Reed Olympians. The Wolverines fell prey to Newman, 42-20, allowing Greenies’ senior quarterback Wes Luquette to toss for six touchdowns.

FHS (15-2) remained unblemished in District 5-I play with a 5-0 mark. Slidell (10-9) slipped to 2-3 in district action, heading into Wednesday’s action.

Mandeville overcomes penalities, beats Slidell
Mandeville’s Skippers overcame 11 penalties at home Thursday night and held off the Slidell Tigers for a hard fought, 24-21, district victory. The Skippers (4-0) moved to 2-0 in District 7-5A play, while the Tigers (2-2) are even at 1-1 in the district. Both offenses were sluggish in the first half as the officials littered the field with yellow penalty flags. Mandeville was whistled for seven penalties totaling 50 yards, while Slidell was flagged five times for 33 yards in the opening stanza. MHS was called for 11 infractions for 80 yards, while SHS had seven penalties for 43 yards overall. In addition, numerous penalties were declined based on the situation.

Northshore hangs on to beat Fontainebleau, 14-13
Trailing 14-13, Fontainebleau lined up to kick the game-tying extra point. A bad snap forced holder Addison Melancon to attempt a potential winning pass, but Northshore’s Jimmy Wentworth knocked the ball down, helping the Panthers hang on for the win Thursday at NHS.

Pearl River junior Kendall Twillie stepped up for his Rebel teammates when he was sorely needed Friday and ran for 188 yards and a score, helping his team to a 43-16 victory over Albany on the road. Adding to PRHS’ attack was Jeremiah Levy, who rushed for 75 yards.
