District One Christmas parade looks for participants

Even though the St. Tammany Fire District 1 Christmas Parade in Slidell won’t roll until Dec. 7, firefighters are looking for residents who want to be in the parade.

The theme of this year’s parade is “Mardi Gras says Merry Christmas to Slidell,” and appropriately, District 1 is asking for all the Mardi Gras krewes to participate. There is also a special invitation to all residents to register their pickups, SUVs and any other vehicle they would like to be in the parade. There will first, second and third place plaques awarded for best decorated truck, trailer or float.

Instead of a registration fee, District 1 is asking for donations that will go to the Community Christian Concern, or to District 1’s Fit as a Firefighter Camp. The firefighters are asking for a minimum donation of $20.

The CCC assists less-fortunate families in Slidell and Pearl River by providing food, clothing and other necessities to get them back on their feet. Fit as a Firefighter Camp is an award-winning program that offers help to children aged 7-11, who have trouble with their weight. The camp teaches children proper nutrition and health habits as well as putting them through a course of exercises and fun activities.

To get an entry form, contact Carolyn Gilmore at District 1 headquarter at 646-4861. The parade is open to anyone, but space is limited, so the deadline for applications is Nov. 21.
