Parish fair exhibits open, judged

Highlights of the St. Tammany Parish Fair include the many various exhibits. The home economic and crafts exhibits were judged and sweepstakes winners announced on Wednesday, said Janie Kelly of the LSU Ag Center, a coordinator of the event.

Sweepstakes winners include Antoinette Boone in the senior citizens category. Carrie Martin swept the adult clothing, house furnishing and crafts categories. Other winners included Brenda Caston, adult food; Donnis Jenkins, breads; NenaFaye Jarrell, baked goods; Nancy G. Gaines, amateur arts; Terrie Weisheit, ceramics; the Highland Ladies, large booth exhibit; John Keating, small booth exhibit; and Gerry Ebeling, floral.

Exhibits are housed in outlaying building on the fair grounds and include an exhibit on how to carve an apple head for a doll and baking potatoes in a microwave.

The 4-H and Future Farmers of America livestock exhibits include a variety of chicken breeds, rabbit breeds, geese, turkeys, goats, sheep and calves. Mini-farms are provided by school FFA clubs for petting enjoyment by kids of all ages.

Friday’s parade through downtown Covington will begin at 10 a.m. and will include the beauty queens and elected officials.

The 4H talent show will take place at 10:45 a.m. and will include a special ice cream by Blue Bell commemorating the 4H Centennial. Opening ceremonies will take place at 11 a.m. The midway will open on Friday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with $12 pay one pay tickets.

After 3 p.m., coupons will be available 22 for $20. Saturday the midway will be open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with pay one price $15. Sunday only the midway will be open to the public at $15 pay one price starting at 10 a.m.
