FHS upped its season record to 20-2 heading into yesterday’s district road game with St. Scholastica Academy.

Haley Bonneval added four kills with a block and an assist. Caitlyn Auxilien topped the Lady Dawgs with nine digs. Michelle Cabeceiras added eight assists, four digs, two kills and two aces.

Guttierrez made her presence felt at the net with two kills and two blocks and added four digs. Auxilien added eight digs. McCrea Barney netted seven assists. In Saturday’s third game, FHS downed the host St. Thomas More Lady Cougars, 25-17, 29-27, on the strength of Barron’s 11 kills. Schneck came up big for the Lady Bulldogs with six digs, five kills, two blocks, an ace and an assist. Cabeceiras tallied 11 assists, four digs, one kill and an ace. Barney passed off for 11 assists in the victory. Guttierrez notched four kills, four blocks, three digs with two aces and an assist.

FHS closed out the tournament Saturday, outlasting Sam Houston, 18-25, 25-22, 15-11. After losing its first game of the tournament, the Lady Bulldogs regrouped to win the next two games to capture the title. Barron was impressive with 16 kills, five blocks and five digs. Guttierrez totaled 10 digs, five kills, two blocks and an assist. Bonneval notched five kills and two blocks. Anderson, Barney and Cabeceiras combined for 27 assists, while Auxilien added nine digs.

FHS coach Danny Tullis said he was proud of the way his team hung tough.

“We went stretches of playing really well during the tournament, but there were other times when we failed to take advantage. That happens. It was a long day having to play four matches,” Tullis said.

“We are finding ways to win. We are pushing through the occasional periods of adversity, and getting it done.”

Tullis said he felt his club depended on the hitting of Barron too much at times. “The team did what they had to do to win. Our overall team defense was lacking at times, but they overcame it to win the tournament,” Tullis added.
