Sports Notes Golf Tournament set tomorrow Upward Community Services is hosting their first-ever Golf Tournament tomorrow at Covington Country Club. Upward is a local non-profit organization that has served the working poor and at-risk population on the Northshore for almost 20 years. Special guests will include New Orleans Saints Hall of Famer Dalton Hilliard and several of his Saints colleagues. Sponsorships and players are still welcome. Pelican Running meets Saturdays The Pelican Running Club is a Pelican Athletic Club community program and is starting their third marathon-training season. The group meets each Saturday morning at 7 at the Mandeville Trailhead for a group training run on the Tammany Trace. The suggested training schedules (available online at mardigrasmarathon.com) are designed for folks training to complete their first marathon or half-marathon event. The group is very participatory in nature and we’ve had great fun the past two years preparing for the New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon events. The training group is open to the entire community. The dates are Oct. 12, 19, 26 and Nov. 2. The time frames are 1:30-3 p.m. for ages 13-14 and 3:30-5 p.m. for those 7-12. The last day of fall training will include tryouts for the 2009 Club Season. Pig Pen golf tourney upcoming The Pig Pen 20th annual Golf Tournament will take place on Oct. 13 at Royal Golf Club with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The two-man scramble is open to the public for $60 a person. The cost includes green fee, cart fee, range balls, drinks, lunch, ditty bag and everyone will receive a door prize at the conclusion of play. The tournament will feature a closest to the hole contest, longest drive and golfers can purchase mulligans. Our Lady of Lourdes fishing tournament The Our Lady of Lourdes Men’s Club is holding a fishing tournament Oct. 18 at the Dock of Slidell. The cost to enter is $35 for a family and their children. The fee includes the entry for fishing and a wristband for free food and drinks. The event will feature a live and silent auction along with a raffle for prizes. St. Anselm golf tournament The third annual St. Anselm Golf Tournament will take place on Oct. 20 at Tchefuncte Country Club in Covington. Check-in for the four-man scramble is scheduled for 11 a.m. with a noon-shotgun start. The entry fee is $125, which includes green fees, cart, lunch, beverages and dinner following the tournament. Prizes will be awarded for events including the longest drive, closest-to-the-hole, super mulligans, betting hole and a hole-in-one-contest. Montz holding soccer camps in December The Jared Montz Pro Soccer Camps will be held Dec. 13-14 at Coquille Sports Complex and then again Dec. 27-31 at Pelican Park. Montz is a Mandeville High graduate and professional soccer player. Both clinics are for children ages 5-13. The one at Coquille will run from 1-4 p.m. the cost is $65 if you pay by Nov. 13, $75 by Dec. 12 and $85 by Dec. 13. The cost includes an autographed picture, Montz soccer ball, question and answer session, chances to win Montz gear, prize giveaway, camper action pictures from e-mail and a chance to be on Montz TV. Campers must provide water, ball, cleats, shin guards and sunscreen. For the clinic at Pelican Park, the cost is $180 by Nov. 25, $195 by Dec. 26 and then $205 by Dec. 27. The cost covers the same things in both camps, but participants receive a T-shirt in the second camp. The camp will run from 1-4 p.m. on Dec. 27-28 and 9 a.m. until noon Dec. 29-31. Lil Sluggers fall registration Lil Sluggers is a child development program created to introduce the basics of baseball and softball to boys and girls ages 2-5. Lil Sluggers classes develop important skills such as throwing, catching, hitting and base running. Developmentally appropriate equipment and games are used to teach the game in a fun, exciting and positive environment. All classes are held indoors with a maximum of six students per class. The fall session starts tomorrow with indoor classes held at the Coquille Sports Complex and the Sandlot in Madisonville. AAU Basketball Fall Training The Northshore Basketball Training Center is taking registrations for the fall Amateur Athletic Union training season, which is a prelude to the start of the 2009 AAU season. The center plans to have nine AAU teams again this year from ages 8-14 for both boys and girls. Training has already begun and goes through mid December, but registration is still being accepted. Monday evening anglers The Monday Evening Anglers will meet every Monday at Bonfouca Marina in Slidell at 4 p.m. with blast-off at 4:30. There is a $20 membership fee and $25 tournament fee. Northshore Tennis Association offers youth program The Northshore Tennis Association has an ongoing Junior and Mr. Pee Wee development tennis program for boys and girls ages 4-18. It starts with private or semi-private sessions to familiarize youngsters with tennis terms, stroke production and procedures. The year-round programs are held on the Kehoe-France Northshore School and public courts in Covington and Mandeville. Competitions are held for boys and girls 10 and under that have not been ranked on a state level and are new to tournament competition. Yearly registration is $25 and $5 and an unopened can of tennis balls is required per tournament or $8 total per tournament.
