An undercover Sheriff’s Office deputy was beat up and sent to a hospital during a Covington area brawl last month, the Sheriff’s Office revealed this week.

The deputy, whose name is being withheld to protect his identity, was working undercover in plain clothes Sept. 26 about midnight when a fight erupted behind the Green Room on Covington’s Boston Street.

Ryan Kennedy, 21, of 31030 Watts Thomas Road, was accused of slapping a female, prompting the undercover deputy to run to her rescue. But when he approached, Kennedy said, “hold up,” and then punched the deputy, a Sheriff’s Office insider said.

Kennedy continued to punch the deputy until his nose was “busted up,” his ribs were bruised and eye was black, authorities said. He was taken to an unspecified hospital for treatment, Capt. George Bonnett said.

Kennedy fled the scene, but several hours later, at 3:30 a.m. Sept. 27, he turned himself into authorities, Bonnett said.

Kennedy was arrested and charged with resisting an officer, battery of a police officer and second-degree battery, Bonnett said.

He was released from jail Sept. 27 on a $31,000 bond, Bonnett said.
