The deputy, whose name is being withheld to protect his identity, was working undercover in plain clothes Sept. 26 about midnight when a fight erupted behind the Green Room on Covington’s Boston Street.
Ryan Kennedy, 21, of 31030 Watts Thomas Road, was accused of slapping a female, prompting the undercover deputy to run to her rescue. But when he approached, Kennedy said, “hold up,” and then punched the deputy, a Sheriff’s Office insider said.

Kennedy fled the scene, but several hours later, at 3:30 a.m. Sept. 27, he turned himself into authorities, Bonnett said.
Kennedy was arrested and charged with resisting an officer, battery of a police officer and second-degree battery, Bonnett said.
He was released from jail Sept. 27 on a $31,000 bond, Bonnett said.
