FHS girls finish third at meet

FHS' Deeble comes out on top

Fontainebleau cross-country runner Amy Deeble won the Holy Cross/Chalmette Invitational, and teammate McKaela Thurber finished sixth in the three-mile race held at City Park in New Orleans Sept. 27.

The Lady Bulldogs took third place.

Deeble’s time of 19:28.37 was the best in the field of 128 runners. Thurber ended the race with a time of 21:16.46, less than two seconds out of fifth.

Fontainebleau coach Leonard Tridico said Deeble ran a great race.

“She looked comfortable,” Tridico said. “She ran at a good pace and pulled in a time she was real happy with.”

St. Joseph Academy’s Allison Fontenot (20:53.32) finished second, followed by teammates Bonnie McLindon (21:05.16) and Claire Hosslay (21:09.91). Dominican’s Meghan Charbonnet rounded out the top five.

Louise McGehee’s Helen Kohnke (21:26.30) took seventh, with St. Joseph’s Katherine Alch (21:29.01), St. Michael’s Olivia Flaggout (21:29.27) and St. Joseph’s Victoria Meroney (21:32.58) rounding out the top 10.

In the team portion, St. Joseph Academy won with 27 points. Dominican (81), Fontainebleau (112), St. Michael’s (143) and Louise McGehee (148) rounded out the top five of the 12 teams that qualified. Seventeen schools took part.

Slidell (293) recorded a seventh-place finish behind Ursuline (211).

In the boys competition:

Three local runners, Fontainebleau’s Zach Harris, Slidell’s Zachary France and FHS’ Corey O’Dell finished in the top 15 for the meet, which featured 166 runners.

Harris took fifth place by running the 3-mile race in 16:54.29, edging out France (16:58.11), who came in sixth. O’Dell (17:19.03) tallied 11th place. France said he was happy with his time to begin the season.

“It felt good,” France said. “For it to be the first race of the year, it was a good finish.”

He also talked about the course.

“The track was soft, and it had a lot of straight-aways. It was really hot, and there weren’t a lot of trees,” France said.

Jesuit’s Taylor Bacques (16:30.20) topped the competition, while Brother Martin’s Scott Richardson (16:46.37) was runner-up. Jewel Sumner’s Cody Trout (16:51.64) finished third, followed by University High’s Ben Kilpatrick (16:52.50).

Jesuit’s Alex Bukaty (17:00.52) was seventh, Dutchdown’s Jeff Boudreaux (17:07.04) was eighth, Jesuit’s Peter Flores (17:10.87) was ninth.

In the team competition, Jesuit topped the field with 53 points, while Brother Martin (62) came in second. University High (112) was third, St. Michael’s (128) finished fourth and Fontainebleau (132) fifth. Fifteen teams qualified for points.

Holy Cross and Slidell (252) tied for eighth, but since the scoring was based on the top five runners for each team, they used the sixth best time on each squad to determine the winner.

Holy Cross’ won the tiebreaker since its sixth best participant was 96th, and SHS’ was in 101st.
