Archbishop Hannan’s Hawks generated enough offense to win its first game of the year Friday afternoon, downing the Rabouin Falcons, 34-22, at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans. Hannan moved to 1-4, while Rabouin fell to 0-3.

Hawks’ second-year coach George Templet said it was a huge victory for his club, and he was excited for his players.

“All the players and coaches’ hard work finally paid off. The players were able to see the fruits of their labors,” Templet said.

He said his players finally have a sense of relief, getting the first victory under their belts.

Hannan took a 2-0 lead when the Hawks recorded a safety. On the ensuing kick, senior tailback Adam Lewis returned the ball 67 yards for a touchdown to give the Hawks an 8-0 lead. Hannan faked the extra point attempt, instead trying a two-point conversion, which was unsuccessful.

Lewis increased the Hawks’ advantage with an 18-yard rushing touchdown, then Hawks’ junior quarterback Andrew Arceneaux threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Gino Gioe. Michael Tiziani added the point after to make it 21-0.

Rabouin faked a fourth-down punt and picked up a first down. Two plays later, Rabouin got on the board on a 37-yard TD pass to Devin Lucien from Dorrell Fields. The two-point try was unsuccessful.

Hannan went to the locker room with a 21-6 lead.

In the third quarter, Lewis scored on a 10-yard run for the Hawks to make it a 27-6 game. Lewis, the Hawks’ top offensive threat this season, has seven rushing touchdowns.

In the fourth Gioe tallied on a 10-yard run. Tiziani kicked the point after, 34-6.

Hannan limited Rabouin to 120 yards of total offense, 45 yards rushing and 75 yards passing.

Rabouin’s Wesley Moore scored on a 12-yard run with a two-point conversion, and Lucien caught a 29-yard pass from Fields with a final two-point conversion to end scoring.

Templet credited his defense with a good showing. Templet said linebacker Lee Laughlin did a good job putting pressure on the quarterback and also supported in stopping Rabouin’s running game.

“To have the defense play so well was phenomenal,” Templet added.

Seniors Ethan Lopinto and Joseph Bertucci intercepted passes for the Hawks, while junior Joey LaRocca recovered a fumble.

Hannan picked up just seven first downs. The Hawks rushed for 72 yards. Arceneaux completed 4-of-10 passes for 82 yards.

Templet said his club still has corrections to make on the offensive side of the ball.

“We did enough offensively to keep ourselves in the game. That gave us a chance to win. I’m excited for our players,” Templet added.

Hannan travels to Welsh Friday to tackle the Greyhounds.
