For the past few years state government has collected $7 million of your lost money.

On Saturday it hopes to give it all back.

The Louisiana Treasury Office will host an unclaimed property day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, at the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center in Covington.

The local money, a sliver of more than $360 million owed to all Louisiana residents, is typically checks owed to employees or investors that can’t be located, usually because of a wrong address. When that occurs the state collects the money for safekeeping until it can locate the owner and dispense the money.

Usually those monies include old saving or checking accounts, uncashed payroll checks, certificates of deposit, stocks and dividend payouts, insurance proceeds, oil and gas royalty payments, utility deposits and tax refunds.

“If anyone is hesitant to look for unclaimed money, let me assure you there are no strings attached with the unclaimed property program,” State Treasurer John Kennedy said. “It only takes a few minutes to look up you name or the name of someone you know, and it’s a free service.”

Those looking for unclaimed property should bring a photo ID and social security card to claim their money to the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center at 701 N. Columbia St. in Covington. Once claimed, the money should be sent to you in six to eight weeks.

Over the past 10 years, the Treasury’s unclaimed property division has returned more than $153 million to 220,000 Louisiana residents, Kennedy said in a press release.

Kennedy encourages Louisiana residents who cannot attend the Oct. 18 unclaimed property event to search for missing money online at www.latreasury.com or by calling the treasury’s toll-free hotline at 1-888-925-4127.
