“I was concentrating on not missing my serves or I was going to have to run at practice. After getting the 24 in a row in she felt she wouldn’t have to run,” Lee said.
Commenting on her jump serving, she said she tosses the ball up pretty well so she wanted to try to work on that part of her game.
“I think our team really came together in the second game. When we come together, we play really well,” Lee added.
Lee turned in a good all around match, tallying a team-high eight digs and chipped in with seven kills.
Hannan first-year coach Jennifer Pujol, a former Covington High player and college player, said she has never seen anyone serve like Lee did in game two.
“I’ve been around volleyball for many years, and I have never seen that kind of serving in my life. It was incredible,” Pujol said.
Pujol has her club believing in itself.
“We’re coming together as a team. We have great unity, and are playing with intensity. The players are doing a great job in district (4-1). I’m proud of their performance,” Pujol said.
With Hannan leading 6-5 in game one, Stephanie Gonzales ran off five straight points, including an ace to build an 11-5 margin. Bishop McManus was able to regain serve, and My-Lien Le served two aces to cut the lead to 11-8.
Following a Lee kill, Julie Betz tallied five points for the Lady Hawks to push the advantage to 17-8. Bishop McManus’ Kimberly Williams came up with a block, and then followed with two service points to cut the lead to 17-11.
The Lady Hawks put game one away with Bailey serving the final three points including two aces for a 25-15 victory. Bailey totaled five kills in game two.
Hannan’s Lee opened game three with a service point, but uncharacteristically followed with a net serve, stopping her consecutive point streak at 25, including her 24 straight in game two. With the game tied 3-3, Betz knocked down a kill. Bailey collected three straight points to make it 7-3. Leading 8-4, Betz tallied two points. With Hannan on top 12-6, Lee managed to serve three straight points to increase the lead to 15-6. Bailey fashioned a kill, and then served two points for an 18-7 margin.
Later, Bailey spanked another kill to make it 23-14.
Eighth-grader Maddi Shelton served an ace. Bishop McManus scored on a Aurellia Whitmore kill before Hannan’s Bailey closed out game three 25-15 with an authoritative kill.
Hannan junior setter Kimmy Kirsch passed off for 13 assists, and played big at the net with seven kills. When asked about her number of kills, Kirsch responded, “I was really happy getting those kills. I always want to hit, but I never get the chance as the setter. I had to show them all that I could hit,” Kirsch said.
“I think we’re coming together as a team, and getting better by the day,” the junior setter added.
Bailey, Hannan’s lone senior, topped the Lady Hawks with 11 kills. She also came up with seven digs and three aces. Gonzales totaled seven digs. Betz had five digs, two aces and one kill.
Bailey said it was a huge win not allowing a point in game two. “It was unbelievable getting a shutout. Games like that lifts everyone’s spirits. We played well as a team,” Bailey said.
Hannan eighth grader Kerry Portie also saw playing time in the match turning in a nice defensive performance.
