MJH edges SJH in double overtime

Mandeville Junior High School extended its winning streak to three games by defeating the Slidell Tigers 24-18 in double overtime on Tuesday night at SHS.

After holding the potent Tiger offense at bay for most of the game, Slidell broke loose on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Thomas Thornton to Mike Cooper with 3:56 remaining in the game making the score 12-6.

Following a three-and-out by the Patriot offense, the Tigers marched 80 yards for the tying score with under a minute to play. After exchanging scores in the first overtime period, the Patriot defense rose to the occasion once again. Facing a fourth-and-goal at the 10-yard line, Slidell’s Thornton came up two yards short, turning the ball over to the Patriot offense.

On their first offensive play in the second overtime period, Mandeville quarterback Todd Primo bootlegged around right end and found tight end Zack Boudreaux in the back of the end zone for the game winning score. In handing the Tigers their first loss of the season, the Patriots avenged an earlier loss to Slidell 18–0.

After a scoreless first half, the Patriots broke the tie early in the third quarter with a two-yard run by Nate Van Horn, set up by a 14-yard pass completion from Primo to Boudreaux. After holding the Tigers on fourth-and-four, and following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by the Tigers, the Patriots marched 35 yards for their second score midway through the fourth quarter. Offensively, the Patriots were led by Van Horn led the Patriots with 42 yards on 13 carries with two TDs. Boudreaux had 59 receiving yards and a score. Primo managed the game well completing 5-of-8 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another.

Defensively, the Patriots turned in an impressive performance led by Parker Richerson with nine tackles and Preston Winget had seven. De Lawrence Johnson chipped in with five tackles and a forced fumble while Jeremy Priolo had one fumble recovery.

The Patriots travel next week to Bogalusa to take on the Lumberjacks before closing out their season at home against the Fontainebleau Hurricanes on Oct. 28.

Slidell plays host to Boyet in their final district contest of the year.

Slidell Junior High School’s Mike Cooper tallied three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving, while Thomas Thornton accounted for three scores in a 36-12 victory over Fontainebleau Junior High in a game held last Thursday at SHS.

The Tigers moved to 4-0, while the Hurricanes fell to 0-4.

Slidell Junior High led 36-0 after the third quarter, then Fontainebleau posted 12 points in the final period.

In the first quarter, Slidell took a 6-0 lead when Rawn Richardson caught a 50-yard pass from Thornton, who was 2-for-3 for 125 yards. The two-point conversion failed.

Later in the period, Jamil Evans scored on a 33-yard run, and Cooper added the two-pointer to make it 14-0.

In the second quarter, Cooper got into the scoring act when he caught a 75-yard pass from Thornton. The failed two-pointer kept things at 20-0

Then Cooper, who ran for 103 yards, found the end zone on the ground as he ran 65 yards and then added the two-point conversion to put his team up 28-0, which is where the game stayed until halftime.

In the third quarter, Cooper scored his team’s final TD on a 5-yard run. Nick Smith ran the successful two-point conversion, and Slidell had a 36-0 advantage.

Cooper also had six tackles, as did Tyler Ruano. Matt Robinson was in on five stops.

Fontainebleau’s touchdowns were scored by seventh-grade quarterback Larry Roth.

Slidell coach Joey Brockhoff said he was happy about getting ahead early, but gave Fontainebleau credit for continuing to battle.

“Even after we got a big lead, they kept playing hard,” Brockhoff said. “Our offense played its best game of the year. I was proud on how well our second string players did.”
