The Welsh Greyhounds made the most of eight turnovers Friday night at home cruising past the Archbishop Hannan Hawks 61-16. Welsh (4-2) made the Hawks (1-5) pay for their mistakes.

Hannan turned the ball over on each of its first five possessions, losing three interceptions and two fumbles. Welsh took advantage of each of the five gifts to take a 35-0 lead. Hannan finally got over their turnover woes, and put together a late second quarter drive that ended with senior kicker Michael Tiziani booting a 37-yard field goal with just one second left in the half to make it 35-3.

Welsh senior quarterback Michael Caraway tossed for three touchdowns, covering 43, 16 and 54 yards. Caraway connected on 4-of-7 for 127 yards. He also ran for one touchdown on a 37-yard keeper, and topped the Greyhounds with 62 yards rushing on six carries. Senior wingback Keagan Ryder caught two of Caraway’s TD tosses, and also tallied on an 18-yard run.

Greyhound senior linebacker Emmanuel Broussard returned an interception three yards for a score.

Welsh picked up 22 first downs with 415 yards of total offense. The Greyhounds rushed for 247 yards and picked up 168 passing. Hannan gained 13 first downs with 149 yards passing, but just 21 yards rushing.

Hawks’ senior fullback Gino Gioe tallied twice. Gioe scored on a two-yard run early in the third quarter with Tiziani kicking the PAT to put the score at 42-10.

He tallied his second score on a seven-yard run late in the fourth quarter. The point after was missed wide right.

Gioe said the touchdowns felt good, but he was disappointed with the loss.

“Those early turnovers were pretty bad because they scored on each of them. We need to work on getting our offense going. We need to find a way to stop the turnovers,” Gioe said.

Hannan coach George Templet said Welsh’s passing attack was the difference in the game.

“Our defense held its own against their running game, despite the turnovers.”

Templet said his offensive line did a good job. “Andrew (Arceneaux) had time to throw. We were able to spread the ball around. I was pleased with the way we got our different receivers involved,” Templet added.

Archbishop Hannan takes on Cohen Saturday night playing at Tornado Alley in Hammond with kickoff set for 7 o’clock.
