St. Charles Catholic School blanks Pope John Paul II

St. Charles Catholic scored 13 points off Pope John Paul II turnovers and snapped the Jaguars four-game winning streak with a 20-0 victory in a non-district home game held Friday.

PJP is 4-2 overall this season, while St. Charles Catholic is 5-1.

Things didn’t go well for the Jaguars from the opening possession as the Comets drove 63 yards on the first drive and scored on a 3-yard run by Courtland Taylor. St. Charles Catholic led 7-0 with about 6:30 left in the first quarter.

In the second period, St. Charles Catholic recovered a fumble on the Jaguars’ 18 and took advantage of the miscue. The Comets’ quarterback tallied from 18-yards out to put his team ahead 14-0 after the successful PAT.

The score stayed that way until the third quarter when Pope John Paul’s offense committed another turnover on a fumble. That led to a 1-yard run by the Comets, but Cory Davis blocked the extra point, keeping the deficit at 20-0.

PJP coach Mark Jeanmard also gave credit to the Comets defensive line.

“They kept pressuring us and we couldn’t move them out the way,” Jeanmard said.

Defensively, PJP’s Tyler Lusignan and James Cousin each intercepted a pass. Tyler Martin had a pair of sacks and Bobby Mayfield added one more.

Jeanmard said he was happy with the way his defensive unit performed.

“I thought we played well defensively,” Jeanmard said. “We executed on defense, but we were not sharp on offense. We have to improve as a team.”

Another bright spot for PJP came with running back Ross Macaluso carrying the ball 23 times for 88 yards.

The Jags, who are 1-0 in district, will step back into league play Friday night when they travel to play against Springfield.
